Epic RPG, Online and Off, A Historical Account And The Mummy
There have likely been epic RPGs since the Elizabethan era, but they sure have changed. Although role-playing-games have undoubtedly been around longer, what we recognize as the RPG began as Dungeons and Dragons, a table game between friends. This table game of sword and sorcery also became the computer game Dungeons when monitor screens were still green. Reenactments of historical battles became an RPG in miniature scale with a large, constructed table top designed as the battlefield complete with all battlefield accoutrements and tiny, painted soldiers. In my mind’s eye I can see men from the 16th and 18th centuries in their generous and well-decorated parlors playing the first RPG by reeacting a historical battle.
